Missy Galang
is a San Diego-based painter who treats her studio like a research lab for social norms. Her work is a running commentary on the invisible rules we inherit—from family, culture, and the world around us—and what happens when we start to outgrow them.
She paints from the perspective of a first-generation Filipina, a rule-following rebel, and an urban homebody who makes her own kefir and sourdough but refuses to move to the suburbs. Using a mix of quiet observation and blunt humor, she captures the universal experience of navigating expectations we didn’t necessarily sign up for. She has exhibited regionally, building a body of work driven by social inquiry and the search for people who see the same friction she does.
We all live by invisible rules. Some are inherited through family and culture; others are imposed by the world around us—and often, by ourselves. I make paintings about these rules and the tension between what we preserve and what we change.
I’m fascinated by the moment a tradition starts to feel less like a foundation and more like a cage. This friction shows up everywhere: in the places we go, the things that stay with us, and the small, meaningful experiences that shape who we are.
Some of my pieces are quiet and observational; others are a bit more confrontational. I often lean into humor—mostly as a coping mechanism, but also because it's a better way to tell an uncomfortable truth.
Art is my way of noticing how we decide what to carry forward, what we pick up along the way, and what we’re finally allowed to outgrow. My paintings are the signal I send out—a way to find the people who see the same friction I do.
